Letting the Light In

“Ring the bells that still can ring. There is no perfect offering. There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in” -Anthem, Leonard Cohen.

If you are paying attention, you have probably noticed that our world is experiencing tumultuous times. War, apathy, division. It is overwhelming and heartbreaking.

If you, like me, consider yourself a peacekeeper, change-maker, and a companion of the light this is an especially difficult time to feel helpless. Your self-care routines may feel a bit selfish and unimportant. Here is why they are not.

This world needs emotionally healthy, regulated, peaceful warriors. Protectors of light and love.

I really do practice what I teach (practice, not perfection). I bring myself through the steps of considering my capacity, choosing my practices, honoring my threshold, integrating the work, and celebrating the progress/ process.

Why is this important? Because I show up differently. I show up in relationships differently. I show up in conflict differently. I show up in celebrations differently. In my work, etc. etc. etc.

Forgoing your own care and self compassion can quickly lead to depletion, and a depleted version of you will struggle to exist in these challenging times, let alone shine.

As your practices help you to bring your best self into a world that desperately needs you, remember to also let the light in. You don’t always have to be the giver. What do you enjoy? What brings a smile to your face, or makes you laugh? What makes your whole body relax?

  • Spend some time in nature

  • Connect with a close friend

  • Take a break from digital media

  • Serve your community/ volunteer

  • Listen to music

  • Dance

  • Laugh

  • Fill your cup

These things in their inherent profundity, may seem simple and perhaps silly on the surface, but they have the power to bring you back to your glorious center.

Now, go and serve the world . We need who you are.

We are being called to do our individual work, but we don’t have to do it alone. It can be done in community. If you are looking for support in this area, I invite you to explore Body Language, my signature digital course program that I created to help you translate the messages of your body. You can find out more HERE.
